Assistant Academic Manager

LAL, having recently celebrated over 30 years in the industry, is a well-established, international English language provider for adults and juniors, supported by a large German parent company. We are looking for a talented Assistant Academic Manager for our school in Cape Town to support the Academic Manager and General Manager as required.

To oversee all aspects of the teaching operation at the school

Main Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Line manage teaching staff, delegating relevant deputy tasks to senior teachers
  • Supervise senior teachers, ensuring they are adequately being utilised as the primary point of contact for student enquiries/ issues.
  • Regulate and monitor all courses so that they are taught effectively and conform to the description given to the customer through the school, the website and agents’ literature
  • To administer tests and organise placement of new students on a weekly basis
  • To update Infospeed Class with students’ details to include class changes and attendance
  • To plan classes in advance on a weekly basis with regard to student:teacher ratios
  • To calculate forward numbers of students to inform the recruitment process
  • To conduct, or oversee, student tutorials and ensure that reports are available to interested parties as required
  • To monitor students’ progress and actively promote independent learning
  • To liaise with line manager with regard to overall planning  and the allotment of teachers to classes
  • To be available to students for advice on courses and to provide learning support as necessary
  • To participate in the process of the recruitment of teachers, including the short-listing and interviewing of candidates in accordance with HR policies and procedures
  • To provide or oversee the induction of successful candidates
  • To oversee the preparation and booking of IELTS, Cambridge Suite and any other examinations as required
  • To meet and liaise with International Group Leaders (IGLs) to ensure they are aware of department practices and have a personal contact
  • To liaise with LAL Business Development Managers (BDMs) and the LAL Cape Town Client Services and Sales Manager and respond to enquiries of an academic nature
  • To keep all teachers informed of student and/or class changes
  • To work closely with the senior teacher(s) to monitor the attendance and issue student warnings or attendance letters where required. Also to monitor the behaviour of students in class and to inform the relevant department and any agents or other relevant parties of any issues
  • To arrange cover for absent teachers
  • To organise and inform teaching staff of internal and external development sessions, seminars and conferences
  • To conduct formal observations of teaching staff twice a year and deliver feedback to the Academic Manager
  • To conduct regular short, informal observations of teaching staff and deliver feedback to the Academic Manager
  • To teach as required
  • To be fully conversant with the Employee Handbook and all pertinent EDUSA, QCTO and DHET requirements
  • To be familiar with all academic aspects of LAL Advantage and ensure that teachers comply with any LAL protocol relating to the same
  • To assist in the overall preparation for external inspections and take the lead for the academic function as required
  • To be fully conversant and compliant with LAL Health and Safety Policy
  • To represent the Academic Department at internal and external meetings and conferences as required
  • To collate, calculate and update the payroll spreadsheet for the teaching staff
  • To monitor teachers’ attendance/absence and holidays, and to maintain updated records
  • Provide additional course descriptions and details as required
  • Be responsible for the implementation of the teachers CPD sessions issuing training relevant to the needs of the teaching body
  • Assist in the development of courses
  • Any additional duties as required by the business

Qualifications

 

  • Degree qualification or equivalent
  • TEFL/CELTA

 

Experience

  • General office administration experience
  • Teaching experience at all levels
  • Experience of use full range of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience of people management
