Academic Manager / Assistant Academic Manager/ Leisure Manager
Hours of Work/Employment Agreement Type:
Your normal hours of work are 48 per week over a five and a half day week. You may be required to work additional hours when requested to meet the needs of the business. This position involves working on weekends and other unsocial hours. Please see school specific teacher / activity leader example schedule.
Responsibilities & Tasks
- To live on-site with board and lodging provided as part of the salary package, from three days prior to the start of the course until the last contracted day.
- To attend induction & preparation sessions as required, up to three days prior to the start of the course.
- To participate fully in all aspects of the induction period prior to the start of the course. This may include the unpacking, inventorying and setting up of all summer school departments.
- To carry out all tasks concerned with the setting up, administration and closing down of the course as advised by line management.
- To participate fully in the closing down of the summer school the day after all students leave.
- To actively participate in excursion and activity sessions both on and off-site as required by line management.
- Attend a daily briefing scheduled to take place at the end of every working day (approximately 11pm).
- To accompany and lead students on excursions, activities and transfers to and from the airport, ensuring their well-being and safety.
- To assist in the placement testing and classroom allocation of all students.
- To maintain accurate and up to date records of work, classroom registers, lesson plans and any other administrative records as required by the LAL Summer Schools.
- To prepare and teach dynamic and communicative lessons across a range of levels to multinational classes comprising students aged 12 – 18 years for a minimum of five teaching sessions a week (a teaching session is 3 hours of contact).
- To set and mark homework as and when required by line management.
- To take responsibility for the successful academic outcomes of all students taught including the setting and marking of progress tests.
- To follow the prescribed scheme of work and develop strategies for successful learning in accordance with directives from the line management.
- To write individual student reports for all students taught.
- To submit to periodic classroom inspections by line management and the CEA.
- To complete end-of-course employee feedback forms on the Summer School.
- To be fully engaged in the rigors of Summer School work.
- To actively link the academic program to leisure program through meaningful activities in the classroom.
- To protect the property and equipment of the designated Summer School and LAL, maintaining security and avoiding loss and/or damage in the residences.
- To act in a seemly and professional manner with all of LAL’s agents, clients and staff and to not engage in any activity which may bring LAL, or the designated Summer School, into disrepute.
- To dress in a manner commensurate with the roles demanded of the position; smart casual for teaching, appropriate clothing for activities/sports and excursions. Any uniform supplied by LAL is to be returned at the end of the course.
- To carry out any other duties as may be reasonably assigned by the Center Manager, Academic Manager, Assistant Academic Manager, and Leisure Manager.
- To read and be fully conversant with the staff handbook, relevant Child Protection issues and all pertinent CEA & LAL Summer Schools requirements prior to the start of the period of employment (documents supplied prior to start of employment).
- To deal with all student, IGL and University representatives’ issues, complaints and suggestions in a positive and effective manner and in adherence with the relevant LAL policies and procedures.
The letters in brackets denote how LAL will establish if you meet our criteria and how that will be determined. The letters have the following meaning: (A) = Application Form, (I) = Interview, (R) = Reference and (T) = Test.
E.g. experience with working with young learners will be determined by the information provided by the candidate on the application form (A) and through questions at Interview (I).
Education, Training and Knowledge
a) Educated to degree level or equivalent (A)
b) Current teaching qualification, Cambridge CELTA or Trinity TESOL certificate, or equivalent (A)

In the event of a successful interview, the applicant will be offered the position and a reply in the first instance either by email or in writing will be required. A teaching session is comprised of 2 x 90 minute lessons.
A teaching workshop carried out by either the AM or one of our DELTA qualified teacher trainers will form part of the preparation period at the beginning of the training. You will also be observed at least once by a qualified member of staff, where you will be invited to take part in a feedback session at the end of the lesson.
Activity Leaders at LAL Boca Raton are required to attend a life guard course prior to the start of their employment (paid for by LAL) if not already lifeguard certified.
A formal offer, confirming location, hours, dates and remuneration will be sent upon receipt of your email acceptance of the position. This will need to be signed and posted and/or scanned and emailed by return.
Any offer of work is subject to a face-to-face interview on arrival, a satisfactory background check or equivalent and favorable references (all references will ask specifically whether there is any reason why you should not be employed in situations where you will have responsibility for, or substantial access to, persons under 18).
An electronic version of the employee handbook, containing the general terms and conditions of employment, will be made available in advance, with acceptance of these terms to be signed at induction on your first day.
Employment Agreement is considered fulfilled upon completion of an appraisal and all requisite feedback forms.
